What's it about?
In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.
Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.
Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.
Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.
Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.
But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.
My review
It's not that I didn't like this book, I enjoyed it but after such a great book trailer and catchy blurb I expected it to be more explosive than it was, but instead some parts just fell a bit flat for me.
I found it to be long and slightly dragging in some places and it changed scenery to often.
I got the impression that when Allie changed she would be relentless in going after the Vampires and trying to take them down because she hates them so much, but she really didn't, she stayed hidden with Kanin and did what he told her and then ran away when he said to and followed round Zeke and his 'family', it just didn't feel like she did much at all. she does uncover some secrets but they were more accidental and convenient rather than her looking for them.
I did find it really interesting in reading a book that's from the new Vampires perspective though, seeing how she dealt with her bloodlust, especially when surrounded by a bunch of Humans who don't know what she is, but again this seemed convenient to, whenever she was starting to lose it to the bloodlust there were some handy bad guys that she fought and drank from instead and accidentally biting her friends.
The ending didn't incite the feelings I think was intended but it was intriguing enough for me to want to read the next book.
Overall the book seemed a bit longer than necessary and there weren't any stand out characters for me, but I didn't hate it and will be reading the next one to see what happens.

My thoughts on the cover
This is a really cool, dark cover. I really like the dark colours and the blood tear and red eye. It definitely makes you want to pick up the book I think.

Favourite quotes
'The vampire just looked at me. Long enough for me to regret taunting him, which was a stupid thing to do from the start.I almost didn't care. I wouldn't grovel and beg, if that's what he was looking for. Vampires had no souls, no emotions and no empathy to appeal to. If the bloodsucker wanted to drain me dry and leave me here to rot, there wasn't anything I could say to stop him.'

'As I smiled back and followed him to where he had set up watch, I couldn't help thinking this boy - this helpful, friendly, genuinely nice human being - was probably going to get me killed.'

  3. I'm super curious about this one. I'm glad to finally see a review that is not only praise since I'm usually the black sheep when everyone loves a book haha. So we'll see.

  4. The Immortal Rules is a story starkly different from Julie Kagawa's The Iron Fey series in both plot and format. Where the protagonist of The Iron King (the first novel in the Iron Fey series) had a clear set objective from the very beginning - save her kidnapped brother, Alison's story does not have a clear narrative path for the reader to follow, at least not until midway through the book. I had no problem with this for the majority of the novel because I prefer character-centric stories and the story of The Immortal Rules was mainly about Alison - her struggles of balancing what she is with who she was.
