The fall of five - Review

The Lorian legacies book four.
Available now.
www.penguin.co.uk

What's it about?
The Garde are finally reunited, but do they have what it takes to win the war against the Mogadorians?
John Smith—Number Four—thought that things would change once the Garde found each other. They would stop running. They would fight the Mogadorians. And they would win.
But he was wrong. After facing off with the Mogadorian ruler and almost being annihilated, the Garde know they are drastically unprepared and hopelessly outgunned. Now they’re hiding out in Nine’s Chicago penthouse, trying to figure out their next move.
The six of them are powerful, but they’re not strong enough yet to take on an entire army—even with the return of an old ally. To defeat their enemy, the Garde must master their Legacies and learn to work together as a team. More importantly, they’ll have to discover the truth about the Elders and their plan for the Loric survivors.
And when the Garde receive a sign from Number Five—a crop circle in the shape of a Loric symbol—they know they are so close to being reunited. But could it be a trap? Time is running out, and the only thing they know for certain is that they have to get to Five before it’s too late.
The Garde may have lost battles, but they will not lose this war.
Lorien will rise again.
My review
Amazing! Awesome! Did I say amazing? Yep, I totally loved this book and if you're a fan of the series, then you will too. I've been in love with this series ever since reading the first book, I've even read all the novella's and hugely anticipate the next release in the series. That being said, I didn't enjoy book three, The rise of nine, quite as much, some of the characters annoyed me slightly and the ending was, meh. It had me worried that maybe the series had peaked and I really wondered what was in store for me when I got my hands on The fall of five, thankfully that didn't stop me starting it the day it arrived and I'm glad I wasn't put off but the series is back to its strongest and remains in my favourites list.
But anyway, you want to know about the book, I don't want to say to much, it's hard to review a book this far into a series without revealing spoilers but I'll try. Although The fall of five seems to move slower than the previous books story wise, its still a great read, the plot is really starting to thicken and there are some surprises in store, especially for anyone that hasn't read the additional short stories! There are less big fights but lots of training action so there's still fighting going on and the book moves along well. This time the book is told from the POVs of John, Marina and Sam, Sam! I'm so happy to have Sam back, I missed him a lot in The rise of nine and getting him back and getting to read from his POV was an extra treat.
So yeah, The Lorian legacies is completely back on form for me, although there's less development in the story we get to spend some time with the characters, getting to know them and seeing how they act and get on together as a group now that they're all together in one place. We also get a small look into the plans of Setrakus Ra!
I am so desperate to see what happens next, only a year to wait. *sigh*

The lost files: The fallen legacies - Quickie review

Lorian legacies; the lost files book three.
Available now.
www.penguin.co.uk

What's it about?

Before Number Four, there were One, Two, and Three. Until now we've only known that the Mogadorians caught Number One in Malaysia. Number Two in England. And Number Three in Kenya. But all of that is about to change. . . .
In I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: The Fallen Legacies, you'll learn the true story behind these ill-fated members of the Garde. Before they were murdered by the Mogadorians, before Number Four was next, they were all just kids on an alien planet called Earth—discovering their powers, trying to stay hidden, and running for their lives.
My review
The latest offering in The lost files series is actually told from the point of view of a Mogadorian! As soon as I heard that, I knew I had to read it as soon as I could get my greedy hands on it.
And The fallen legacies didn't disappoint me at all, it was great getting that insight into a Mogadorians mind, and a teenage one at that, it didn't even occur to me before that there were younger Mogs, but duh, of course there are lol.
The short story was really interesting and I actually got to like Adam, despite him being the 'enemy,' I had a feeling his story would go the way it did and I can't wait to see if he pops up in the main novels now.
It was really interesting seeing what it is Mogadorians believe about what they're doing and how they redeem it to themselves.
This one is another must for the series along with the other two short stories.

My thoughts on the cover
Well, of course it matches the others, so yay, I'm also in love with the colour!

Favourite quote
I am Adamus Sutekh, son of the great general Andrakkus Sutekh. I am a Mogadorian. I am what they should be afraid of.

The rise of nine - Review

The Lorian legacies book three.
Available 30th August 2012.
www.penguin.co.uk

What's it about?

Until I met John Smith, Number Four, I'd been on the run alone, hiding and fighting to stay alive. Together we are much more powerful. But it could only last so long before we had to separate to find the others ...I went to Spain to find Seven, and I found even more, including a tenth member of the Garde who escaped from Lorien alive. Ella is younger than the rest of us, but just as brave. Now we're looking for the others - including John. But so are they. They caught Number One in Malaysia. Number Two in England. And Number Three in Kenya. They caught me in New York - but I escaped. I am Number Six. They want to finish what they started. But they'll have to fight us first.
My review
This is a favourite series for me so after squealing for ten minutes after it arrived through my letterbox I couldn't stop myself starting it straight away! I really enjoyed it, though I wouldn't say it was my favourite of the series, whilst it was still exciting, it lacked some of the fire I felt in the previous books, especially book two which really built on the first.
The rise of nine follows the narratives of Four, Six and Marina and I found the girls parts to be the most interesting, I didn't like Four as much as I had previously, he moons over Sarah a lot and him and Nine, who have set off together, seem to often miss the point of what they're doing and get into a lot of fights, all the male testosterone kind of annoyed me. I also really missed Sam, I hadn't realised just how much I liked his and Fours friendship until it wasn't there and I think I might have a little geeky crush on him lol.
Six, as usual kicks ass! And it was great watching Marina develop throughout the book and find a little crush of her own.
Overall The rise of nine was another thrilling adventure full of action and mystery, there were just some bits I could've done without. The Lorian legacies is still one of my favourite series and I'm seriously looking forward to the next book!

My thoughts on the cover
The cover I have shown above is the adult cover and I like it. I really like the way the pattern is made of birds and the white finish. The YA cover shown here is pretty cool too though. (Click on the image to see a larger version.)

Sorry, no favourite quotes as I read an uncorrected proof copy that is not to be quoted from.

I am number four: The lost files: Six's legacy quickie review

I am number four: The lost files: Six's legacy by Pittacus Lore

What's it about?
Number Six - when John meets her in I Am Number Four she's strong, powerful, and ready to fight. But who is she? Where has she been living? How has she been training? When did she develop her legacies? And how does she know so much about the Mogadorians?
In I Am Number Four: The Lost Files: Six's Legacy, discover the story behind Six. Before Paradise, Ohio, before John Smith, Six was traveling through West Texas with her Cepan, Katarina. What happened there would change Six forever...

My review:
5/5
This is a short eBook prequel novella so I'm just doing a quickie review for it. This is a lovely little insight into what happens to Six before she meets John in I am number four. The events are mentioned in lesser detail in The power of six so you won't be missing anything if you don't read it but you should lol We get to know Six a lot better in this and meet her Cepan Katarina and learn how Six became the bad ass that she is! It's written in the same style as the others which makes for a quick easy read and so if your a fan you should give this a try since it's pretty cheap anyway :)

The power of six review

The power of six by Pittacus Lore.
Releases 23rd August 2011
This is the follow up to the brilliant I am number Four, if you haven't read that you can check out my review here.

What's it about?
We are the last defence.

I've seen him on the news. Followed the stories about what happened to John Smith. To the world he's a mystery, but to me ... he's one of us. Nine of us came here, but sometimes I wonder if time has changed us, if we all still believe in our mission.
There are six of us left. We're hiding, blending in, avoiding contact with one another, but our Legacies are developing and soon we'll be ready to fight. Is John Number Four - and is his appearance the sign I've been waiting for? And what about Number Five and Six? Could one of them be the raven-haired girl with the stormy eyes from my dreams? The girl with powers that are beyond anything I could ever imagine? The girl who might be strong enough to bring the six of us together?

They caught Number One in Malaysia. Number Two in England. And Number Three in Kenya. They tried to catch Number Four in Ohio ... and failed. I am Number Seven. And I'm ready to fight.

My review:
5/5
If you like your books full of action then this is the book for you!
Unlike the first instalment this isn't just told by Johns perspective but also from Marina who is number 7 living in Spain, she balances the constant action from John, Six and Sam who are being hunted by both the Mogs and the police, with more calmer scenes as we get to know her, her situation and her abilities.
As things get more heated for marina the book switches between the two quicker and quicker to make for an explosive ending full of action and suspense.
I really enjoyed this book and the developing relationships between the characters and unlike other middle-of-series books that can just feel like a segue into the next one there's a lot of info on the main plot and some great twists.
I was really glad Sam wasn't left in paradise at the end of I am number four but instead went with John and Six so that he's in this book, I really felt for him and thought he added an extra dimension to the trio. He's an unlikely hero and I have high hopes for him in the future.
Six of course kicks ass and we get to know a little more about her. I have to say I was a little disappointed John doesn't discover any more of his abilities but he's still cool and this is a minor complaint in the grand scheme of things.
We gradually meet a lot of new characters in this addition as well, though not all at once so it's not confusing. I liked Marina a lot and felt her frustration at her situation.
I also liked the other characters we meet later, but I don't want to give anything away so I won't go into them lol.
This is a definite must read for fans of the first book or even for people who only kind of liked it, it'll leave you itching for the next book with it's big double cliffhanger ending!

I am number four review

What's it about?
John Smith is not your average teenager. He regularly moves from small town to small town. He changes his name and identity. He does not put down roots. He cannot tell anyone who or what he really is. If he stops moving those who hunt him will find and kill him. But you can't run forever. So when he stops in Paradise, Ohio, John decides to try and settle down. To fit in. And for the first time he makes some real friends. People he cares about - and who care about him. Never in John's short life has there been space for friendship, or even love. But it's just a matter of time before John's secret is revealed. He was once one of nine. Three of them have been killed. John is Number Four. He knows that he is next ...

My review:
5/5
Although the kind of narrative used in this book is usually one that I find hard to get into i had no trouble with this. Within a few pages I was already hooked and knew I'd like it. I thought John was a very brave straight forward hero and the bond between him and Henri, his father figure, is lovely, it's obvious how much they care for each other and what Henri has given up for John without a second thought. I thought the romance was very sweet though hardly the romance of the century, but then this isn't a romance book so it can be excused. The only complaint I had was a I found a bit of a lull in the middle of the book when there was some action before it went 'quiet' again before the action started up again at the end. But I still found it excellent and even cried my eyes out at the end. Definitely recommend to all and I cannot wait for both the movie and the sequel 'the power of six' out in august.

February Books/word of the month

The first book of the month is I am number four by Pittacus Lore.
Why? To celebrate the movie out this month and because it's awesome and I think you all should read it!

I know there are a whole bunch more different covers but I went with this one because it's the one I own!

Synopsis:
John Smith is not your average teenager. He regularly moves from small town to small town. He changes his name and identity. He does not put down roots. He cannot tell anyone who or what he really is. If he stops moving those who hunt him will find and kill him. But you can’t run forever. So when he stops in Paradise, Ohio, John decides to try and settle down. To fit in. And for the first time he makes some real friends. People he cares about – and who care about him. Never in John’s short life has there been space for friendship, or even love. But it’s just a matter of time before John’s secret is revealed. He was once one of nine. Three of them have been killed. John is Number Four. He knows that he is next . . .

The next book is No Permanent scars by Michael Hemery. It was suggested by Silenced Press
Synopsis: No Permanent Scars reads how creative nonfiction should read: Like fiction. Like nonfiction. Like memoir. Like humor. Like literature. Like life. It’s about childhood, adulthood, the neighborhood and what it means to be a kid, a parent, a teacher, a human. Michael Hemery illuminates an honest working-class existence, offering both the sober realities of class discrimination and the humor and love of family. Intertwined with serious issues such as suicide, alcoholism, abuse, religion, and immigration, Hemery also endures a painfully slow and often naive coming of age (he once mistook an obvious prostitute for an office supply store employee). This is going to be the best book you’ll read this year.

And the word of the month is
